 Friends Newsletter dated August 2010
Our July concert in St Martin’s Church was a great success and exceeded all  expectations. The programme of music by Modern British Composers was very well received by a large audience who clearly appreciated the very enjoyable works by Andrew Carter, Bob Chilcott and Howard Goodall that we were performing. We had some wonderful soloists, including ex-Salisbury Cathedral chorister Charlotte Ashley and our own Rob Blakey, and we were accompanied in the concert by the Salisbury Cathedral Junior Choir, under their Director, Ian Wicks. We are very pleased to have been able to make a substantial donation from the proceeds of the concert to this choir and we look forward to working with them again in the future.  Following the concert, we were very fortunate to be invited by one of our Friends, Mary Cornelius-Reid, to hold our summer party in the garden of her lovely house in Cholderton. Several Friends joined us at this party, which was very much enjoyed by all. We are most grateful to Mary for her very kind hospitality.

Forthcoming Events
Saturday 11 September, Salisbury Cathedral 7.30pm.  ‘The Angel and the Fallen’.
We are taking part in a concert of Peace and Reconciliation organised in aid of the Royal British Legion featuring the international soprano star Hayley Westenra, compère Alistair Stewart, and the Band of the Adjutant General Corps, English Youth Ballet and the Salisbury Cathedral Junior Choir. This concert inaugurates a series of fifty concerts to be held throughout every Cathedral and other venues in Britain during 2011 to celebrate the Royal British Legion’s 90th Anniversary.  The programme of music is designed to reflect the idea of the sacrifices of past and current conflicts with the religious belief that there is another way of resolving the issues that lead to war.  Tickets are on sale now from the Salisbury Playhouse Box Office Tel: 01722 320333.

Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 October  Choir Visit to Saintes
Our overseas trip this year is to Saintes, Salisbury’s twinned town in France. On the musical side we will give two concerts, one in an old peoples home, Les Petites Soeurs (Little Sisters), and another in the Abbaye aux Dames with a French ladies choir, Les Voix Romanes.  We will also be singing at Sunday Mass in the Cathedral St Pierre. Needless to say, we are very much looking forward to this trip, which is our first visit abroad for three years.

Christmas Events 2010
As ever, the St John Singers will be much in evidence in Salisbury over the Christmas period. In summary we will be performing our usual Magic of Christmas concert, in aid of 'Living Water Africa', this year in St Thomas’s Church, on Tuesday 14 December and we will be back in The City Hall on Saturday 18 December for a Wassail being organized by the Salisbury Medical Society to raise funds for the Hospital Stars Appeal.
