St John Singers at Salisbury Cathedral
Who We Are
The St John Singers is an adult SATB choir in Salisbury started in its current form by its Founder and Emeritus Director of Music, John Powell, in 1975, although its history can be traced back to the early 1930s. It is a sociable choir which enjoys its singing and aims to perform to the highest standards. Its main purpose is to give concerts supporting other charities and to sing services in cathedrals and churches. We also make trips abroad, most recently to Rome in October 2017. There is a broad repertoire of choral music (see Past Repertoire drop down) as we try to be versatile in our engagements.
Fund Raising for Charity
Over the years, the St John Singers has supported nearly two hundred different national and local charities, raising several thousands of pounds each year in the process and continues to do so. Particularly significant in its fund raising was the staging of a 'Wassail Party' in Salisbury's City Hall, running for twenty five twenty five years. The "Magic of Christmas" with choir works and audience carols, as well as wine and mince pies is now our major fundraiser.
Joining The St John Singers
We welcome enquiries about joining the choir. If you are interested, please contact Simon Cox, Choir Chair, through the Contact page. Admission to the choir is by an informal voice test.
Engaging The St John Singers
We welcome enquiries about engaging the choir for concerts as well as weddings and other events. As we tend to plan our engagements well ahead, we would ask for as much notice as possible. We are able to provide either the full choir or a smaller group of voices. depending on the type of engagement. We are booking now for 2025 and beyond. Please contact the choir Chair, Kate Henderson, through the Contact page for more information.
For our Future Engagements, please see the Concerts page.
